Works by Achille Etna Michallon (1796-1822), in the public domain, each linked to the record of the museum that holds it. A pupil of Valenciennes and Bertin, Michallon won in 1817 the first Prix de Rome for historical landscape, created that very year. As a resident of the French Academy in Rome, he travelled through the Roman countryside, Tivoli, Naples, Pompeii, Paestum and Sicily, and painted from nature, in oil on paper, rocks, trees, torrents, ruins and figures of peasants, a large group of which is held at the Louvre. Back in Paris, he exhibited large historical landscapes, such as Theseus Pursuing the Centaurs, and taught the young Camille Corot, before dying at the age of twenty-six. Only works that the museums give to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included; the origin of each photograph is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
