Works by Ambroise Louis Garneray (1783-1857), in the public domain, each linked to the record of the institution that holds it. The son of the painter Jean-François Garneray, he went to sea at thirteen, sailed the Indian Ocean, notably with the privateer Robert Surcouf, then spent eight years as a prisoner on the English hulks at Portsmouth, where he began to paint. Back in France, he became marine painter to the Duchess of Berry and the Duke of Angoulême, painted the naval battles of the historical museum at Versailles for Louis-Philippe, and engraved, in hand-coloured aquatint, a long series of views of the ports and coasts of France. Only works that the institutions give to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included; the origin of each photograph is given on the page of the work. For the Palace of Versailles and the museums that have no lasting address for each work, the link leads to their record in the national database of the collections of the museums of France (POP). The titles are those of the institutions, with their translation.
