Bartholomäus Bruyn the Elder (1493-1555) was a German Renaissance painter active in Cologne. He is best known for his portraits of the city’s patricians and their wives, often painted as pendants, as well as for his altarpieces and religious scenes. His portraits, with their coloured backgrounds, arched tops and precise detail, rank among the finest of Rhenish painting of his time.
