Works by Bernard van Orley (c. 1488-1541), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Born in Brussels, painter from 1518 to Margaret of Austria, regent of the Netherlands, and then to Mary of Hungary, van Orley brought into Flemish painting the architecture and movement of the Italian Renaissance, which he discovered through Raphael's cartoons woven in Brussels. He also led the design of the great tapestry series of his time, from the Hunts of Maximilian to the Battle of Pavia, and drew stained-glass windows. Here are his great altarpieces, the Antwerp Last Judgement with the Works of Mercy, the Job altarpiece, the altarpiece of Saints Thomas and Matthias, devotional paintings, tapestries woven after his cartoons, and portraits of Charles V, Margaret of Austria and their circle. Only works that the museums give to van Orley without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
