Works by Charles de Steuben (1788-1856), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it, or to its entry in POP, the public catalogue of the French Ministry of Culture. Born in Bauerbach, in Baden, and brought up in Russia, he entered the studios of Robert Lefèvre, Gérard and Prud'hon in Paris, and made his whole career as a history painter in France: Louis-Philippe commissioned from him for Versailles the great Battle of Poitiers and portraits of the kings of France. His scenes from history and literature, such as La Esmeralda after Victor Hugo, were widely engraved. He later spent several years in Saint Petersburg, where he worked for Saint Isaac's Cathedral and portrayed high society. Only works that the museums give to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included; the origin of each photograph is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
