Works by Charles Landseer (1799-1879), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Born and died in London, the elder brother of the animal painter Edwin Landseer, Charles Landseer painted scenes from English history and literature; elected a Royal Academician in 1845, he was Keeper of the Royal Academy from 1851 to 1873. Here is his great scene of the English Civil War, Cromwell at the Battle of Naseby (1645), bequeathed in 1861 to the Nationalgalerie in Berlin by the banker Joachim Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener, the Plundering of Basing House, a bloodhound and her pups, and two portraits. Several of his paintings, such as The Eve of the Battle of Edge Hill, are not on this page for now: their museums do not publish them online. Only works that the museums give to Charles Landseer without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph of at least 900 pixels exists, are included. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
