Works by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. A pupil of Simon Vouet and a companion of Nicolas Poussin in Rome, he became First Painter to Louis XIV in 1662 and directed the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and the Gobelins manufactory; he designed the decoration of Vaux-le-Vicomte, of the Galerie d'Apollon in the Louvre and of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Only works that the museums give to him without reservation, neither workshop pieces nor replicas, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included: those of museums that place their images in the public domain, or another free photograph, whose origin is given on the page of the work. Two of the great battles of Alexander in the Louvre, Arbela and Porus, are not yet here, for want of a large enough free photograph, nor the ceilings of the Hall of Mirrors, for want of a stable address for their records. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
