Works by Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. A painter of very small, extraordinarily detailed pictures of musketeers, readers, card players and musicians of the time of Louis XIII and Louis XV, Meissonier followed the French army to Italy in 1859 and became the painter of the Napoleonic epic: The French Campaign, 1814, 1807, Friedland, The Cuirassiers of 1805. He lived through the siege of Paris in 1870, which he painted as an allegory, and painted the ruins of the Tuileries, burnt in 1871. Only works that the museums give to Meissonier without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included: those of museums that place their images in the public domain (New York, Cleveland, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Paris) or, for the others, a free photograph whose origin is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
