Works by Francis Hayman (1708-1776), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Born in Exeter and trained as a painter of theatre scenery, Hayman painted around 1741-1742 the large canvases for the supper boxes of Vauxhall Gardens in London: games, dances and popular festivities. A friend of Hogarth and the teacher of the young Gainsborough, he was one of the English painters of conversation pieces, portraits of families or friends gathered in a drawing room or a park. He illustrated Shakespeare, Milton and Cervantes and, during the Seven Years' War, painted for Vauxhall large history paintings celebrating British victories, among them Robert Clive meeting Mir Jafar after the Battle of Plassey (1757), known from its sketch. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. Only works that the museums give to Hayman without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
