Works by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Born in Canton, New York, and trained at the Yale School of Fine Arts, Remington went west as a young man and became the most famous illustrator of the American press: army horsemen, cowboys, Native Americans, prospectors and travellers of the plains. As a war correspondent in Cuba in 1898, he painted the battle of San Juan. In his last years he left illustration for a freer painting, in the bright light of the plains or by moonlight. Only his paintings in colour are included here, without the bronzes or the black-and-white illustrations, and only those that the museums give to him without reservation and of which a freely reusable photograph exists. Some show the violence of the wars of the West and the outlook of their time on Native Americans. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
