Works by Gaganendranath Tagore (1867-1938), in the public domain. The images are published online by the museums that hold the works; the museum is named beneath each work, along with its rights statement when it publishes one. Title, date and medium are taken from these museums' records. Sixteen of the twenty-eight works are lithographs from the satirical album Adbhut Lok ("The Realm of the Absurd"), published in Calcutta in 1917, in which Tagore mocks colonial society, self-serving piety and the caste system; the others are Bengal School watercolours and compositions from his Cubist period, the first in India. The rest of his work is held in India, at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta, which have not yet published it: of the sixty or so works catalogued under his name, only a small part exists online today.
