Works by Gustave Doré (1832-1883), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the institution that holds it: the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain in Strasbourg, the Musée d'Orsay, the Petit Palais, the Royal Monastery of Brou, the Musée d'art Roger-Quilliot, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the National Library of Poland and other museums in Europe, America and Japan. Born in Strasbourg, he published his first albums at fifteen and became the most famous illustrator of his time: Dante's Inferno (1861), Don Quixote (1863), the Bible (1866), La Fontaine's Fables (1867), London: A Pilgrimage (1872). He also wanted to be recognised as a painter: large religious paintings such as Christ Leaving the Praetorium, scenes of Spain and London, landscapes of the Alps, the Vosges and Scotland. The page opens with The Council Held by the Rats, a plate of the Fables from a Polish edition of 1876. Only works that the institutions give to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included; the origin of each photograph is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the institutions, with their translation.
