Works by Horace Vernet (1789-1863), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it, or to its entry in POP, the public catalogue of the French Ministry of Culture. The son of Carle Vernet and grandson of Joseph Vernet, director of the French Academy in Rome from 1829 to 1834, he was the great battle painter of his century: Louis-Philippe commissioned from him the huge canvases of the rooms at Versailles devoted to the history of France, from Bouvines to the campaigns in Algeria. He also painted Italy, the Orient, subjects from Byron and the Bible, and portraits of his friends. Only works that the museums give to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included: those of museums that place their images in the public domain (New York, Washington, Cleveland) or another free photograph, whose origin is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
