Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) was a French painter, draughtsman and printmaker whose work belongs to Impressionism. A friend of Degas, he took part in the Impressionist exhibitions and became known for his scenes of opera backstage, horse races and law courts. He was also a famous caricaturist in the Parisian press.
