History painter, 1838-1921
Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) was a French history painter whose work belongs to academicism. He is best known for his dramatic scenes of the early Middle Ages, such as The Deliverance of the Immured of Carcassonne, and for his monumental decorations in the Panthéon, the Capitole in Toulouse and the Paris City Hall. A highly sought-after teacher, he trained many pupils.
