Works by John Everett Millais (1829-1896), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Admitted to the Royal Academy Schools at the age of eleven, Millais founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, aiming to paint nature with minute exactness and bright colour; Ophelia and Christ in the House of His Parents belong to those years. He then became the most prominent portrait and genre painter of Victorian England, and died President of the Royal Academy. The four wood engravings of the Parables (1864) were cut by the Dalziel brothers after his drawings. Only works that the museums give to Millais without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included: those of museums that place their images in the public domain or, for the others (Tate, the Liverpool museums), another free photograph, whose origin is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
