Works by John Gilbert (1817-1897), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Almost self-taught, Gilbert was first the most prolific draughtsman of the Illustrated London News and the illustrator of Shakespeare's complete works, before making his name as a history painter, in oil as well as in watercolour. President of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1871 and knighted in 1872, he gave a large part of his work, late in life, to the City of London and to the museums of Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Here are his battles, Agincourt and Tewkesbury, his scenes from English history and from Shakespeare, and two portraits, his own and his mother's. Only works that the museums give to Gilbert without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph of at least 900 pixels exists, are included. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
