Works by John Trumbull (1756-1843), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. The son of a governor of Connecticut, an officer in the Continental Army and a pupil of Benjamin West in London, Trumbull set out to paint the history of the American Revolution: he had most of its protagonists sit for him, or drew them from life, painted them in small oil portraits on wood, and then composed the great scenes of battle and surrender. Four of them, enlarged, hang in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington; he gave the studio versions and the portraits to Yale, where in 1832 he founded one of the first university art galleries in the United States. The small portraits are shown here cropped to the painted surface, without the gilt mount that bears the sitter's name. Only works that the museums give to Trumbull without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
