José Benlliure y Gil (1855-1937) was a Spanish painter, born and died in Valencia, the elder brother of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure. He lived in Rome from 1879 and painted there, with a lively and meticulous touch, genre scenes, history subjects and religious subjects sought after by the international market. He directed the Spanish Academy in Rome.
