Joseph Kutter (1894-1941) was a Luxembourg painter and the leading representative of expressionism in Luxembourg. Born in Luxembourg, he studied at the academies of Strasbourg and Munich, where he stayed until 1924 and came under the influence of Cézanne and the German expressionists. He is best known for his portraits, nudes, clowns, still lifes and landscapes of Luxembourg, Italy and the Netherlands. Branded “degenerate” in Germany from 1933, he painted two large pictures in 1936-1937, Luxembourg and Clervaux, for the Luxembourg pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition.
