Filipino painter of history and modern life, gold medal in Madrid in 1884, 1857-1899
Works by Juan Luna (1857-1899), in the public domain, each linked to its record at the institution that holds it. Born in Badoc, in the Philippines, trained at the School of Fine Arts in Manila, then at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid and in Rome, he won the gold medal at the 1884 National Exhibition in Madrid for his Spoliarium, now in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila. The Spanish Senate then commissioned the Battle of Lepanto (1887) from him; the Prado holds his Cleopatra (1881) and the portrait of Víctor Balaguer, Minister for the Overseas Territories, and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum a painting of workers made in Biscay around 1893. Most of his works, held in the Philippines, do not yet have an online record at the institutions that hold them. The images are those of Wikimedia Commons, public domain reproductions or a photograph taken in the galleries under a free licence, whose author is named on the page of the work. The titles are those of the institutions, with their translation.
