Works by Kawakami Tōgai (1828-1881), in the public domain, each linked to its record at the Tokyo National Museum, which holds it. Born in Matsushiro, in Shinano province, and trained in literati painting, he studied Western painting at the shogunate's institute for foreign studies, taught it, notably to Takahashi Yuichi, and opened one of the first Western-style painting studios in Japan. The three album leaves come from an album that the museum attributes to Tōgai, Matsumoto Fūko and other painters: only those bearing his seal, "Kawakami Kan" (his real name), are shown. The photographs come from ColBase, the database of the national museums of Japan, which allows their free reuse with mention of the source. The titles are those of the museum, in Japanese, with their translation; as the museum titles only the album, the title of each leaf describes what it depicts.
