Konstantinos Volanakis (1837-1907) was a Greek painter and one of the greatest marine painters of his country. Born in Heraklion, Crete, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Karl von Piloty, alongside other Greek students such as Nikolaos Gyzis and Nikiforos Lytras. He is best known for his views of harbours, his fishing boats and his naval battles, which he painted notably after winning, in 1869, the competition launched by Emperor Franz Joseph to commemorate the Battle of Lissa. Back in Greece in 1883, he settled in Piraeus and taught at the Athens School of Fine Arts until 1903.
