Works by Lionel Royer (1852-1926), in the public domain, each linked to the record of the museum that holds it, or to its record in the French Ministry of Culture's POP database for the paintings still in churches. Born at Château-du-Loir, in the Sarthe, he enlisted at seventeen in the Volontaires de l'Ouest and fought at Loigny in 1870, then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Cabanel and Bouguereau; he won the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1882. A sought-after portraitist and history painter, he is best known for Vercingetorix Throws Down His Arms at the Feet of Julius Caesar, reproduced for a century in French school textbooks, and for the Life of Joan of Arc in the basilica at Domrémy. Only works of which a freely reusable photograph of at least 900 pixels exists are included: the canvases of the Musée de Tessé, those of Domrémy and many others, photographed only at small size or not at all, are not here yet. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
