Works by Louis-François Lejeune (1775-1848), in the public domain, each linked to the record of the museum that holds it. A pupil of the landscape painter Valenciennes, an engineer officer and later aide-de-camp to Marshal Berthier, Lejeune fought on most of the battlefields he painted, from Italy to Egypt, Spain and Russia: his large canvases, held at the Palace of Versailles, combine an exact panorama of the terrain, observed with an officer's eye, and a crowd of episodes seen at close range. Taken prisoner in Spain, he later became director of the school of fine arts in Toulouse, where he painted the landscapes of the Pyrenees. Only works that the museums give to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included; the origin of each photograph is given on the page of the work. For the paintings at the Palace of Versailles, whose website gives no lasting address for each work, the link leads to their record in the national database of the collections of the museums of France.
