Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (1838-1874) was a Catalan painter, born in Reus and died in Rome at the age of 36. He is known for his brilliant and meticulous genre scenes, his Orientalist subjects painted after his stay in Morocco, and for The Spanish Wedding (La Vicaría). His virtuoso art, much sought after by the collectors of his day, influenced many painters of the late nineteenth century.
