Works by Nicholas Hilliard (c. 1547-1619), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. They are miniatures: portraits painted in watercolour on vellum, often stuck onto a playing card, made to be held in the hand and worn as jewels; most measure three to six centimetres, the large full-length miniatures about twenty. They are shown here cropped to the painted surface, without their lockets. Only works that the museums give to Hilliard without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included: those of museums that place their images in the public domain (Cleveland, New York, New Haven, Amsterdam, Stockholm) or, for the London miniatures, another free photograph, whose origin is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
