Nicolae Grigorescu (1838-1907) was a Romanian painter, regarded as one of the founders of modern painting in Romania. After painting icons in monasteries, he trained in Paris and worked at Barbizon, whose light and landscapes left a lasting mark on him. He is best known for his scenes of peasant life, his ox-carts, his portraits of young peasant women and his paintings of the 1877 War of Independence, which he followed with the army. He died in Câmpina.
