Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755-1830) was a French painter, born and died in Paris. A member of the Royal Academy of Painting, he painted genre scenes, battles of the Revolution and the Empire, and Italian landscapes. In 1816 he left for Brazil with the French Artistic Mission, which founded the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro; there he painted views of Rio Bay and the Tijuca forest before returning to France in 1821. His son Félix-Émile later directed the academy.
