Nikiforos Lytras (1832-1904) was a Greek painter and one of the leading figures of the Munich School in nineteenth-century Greek painting. Born on Tinos, he trained in Athens and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and he taught painting at the School of Fine Arts in Athens for almost forty years. He is best known for his scenes of Greek life, his portraits and his paintings inspired by the War of Independence, such as The Dirge in Psara.
