Nikolaos Gyzis (1842-1901) was a Greek painter born on the island of Tinos who died in Munich, where he spent most of his career. A student at the Munich Academy in the class of Karl von Piloty, he became a professor there in 1888 and is one of the leading figures of the “Munich School”. A painter of genre scenes such as The Betrothal of the Children (1877), still lifes and portraits, from the mid-1880s he turned to allegorical and religious subjects: The Spider, Spring Symphony, then Behold the Bridegroom Arriving, which he left unfinished. He deeply influenced nineteenth-century Greek painting.
