Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) was a Turkish painter, born and died in Istanbul. Trained in Paris under Gustave Boulanger, he painted mosque interiors and scenes of Ottoman life, among them The Tortoise Trainer (1906), held by the Pera Museum in Istanbul. An archaeologist as well, he directed the imperial museum of Istanbul, now its Archaeological Museums, from 1881 and founded the city's fine arts school in 1882. In 1884 he also reworked the regulation that protects the antiquities of the Ottoman Empire.
