Batuan painting emerged in the early 1930s in this Balinese village about ten kilometres south of Ubud, where painters trained in the traditional wayang style began drawing densely filled compositions in ink on paper: forests teeming with animals, fables, scenes of village life, dances and ceremonies, and the unseen world of gods and demons. These painters were encouraged by the anthropologists Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead, who assembled a large collection of their works in Bali between 1936 and 1939, and by the artists Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet, co-founders in 1936 of the Pita Maha artists' association.
