Works by Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg (1740-1812), in the public domain, each linked to its record at the museum that holds it. Born in Strasbourg and trained in Paris, he was received into the Académie royale de peinture as early as 1767 with A Battle, then settled in London in 1771: stage designer for David Garrick, inventor of the Eidophusikon, a show of light and sound, he became a member of the Royal Academy and one of the great English painters of the sublime. His battles come first: the defeat of the Spanish Armada and Lord Howe's victory of 1 June 1794 (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich), the battles of the Nile and Camperdown, a naval battle and a cavalry battle from the Louvre, a fight against pirates from Stockholm. They are followed by the Great Fire of London, Coalbrookdale by Night, a founding image of the Industrial Revolution, an avalanche in the Alps, shipwrecks, coaches in thunderstorms and pastoral landscapes. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
