Ștefan Luchian (1868-1916) was a Romanian painter and a leading figure of modern Romanian painting at the turn of the twentieth century. He is best known for his bouquets of flowers (anemones, chrysanthemums, carnations), his landscapes of the Romanian countryside, his portraits and his scenes of the life of ordinary people. Trained in Bucharest, then in Munich and Paris, he was one of the founders of the Tinerimea artistică group. Seriously ill during his last years, he kept painting almost until his death.
