Works by Valentin Serov (1865-1911), in the public domain, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Born in Saint Petersburg, a pupil of Repin and Chistyakov, Serov painted Impressionist portraits in the light of the Abramtsevo and Domotkanovo estates from the late 1880s (Girl with Peaches, 1887), then became the most sought-after portraitist of Moscow and Saint Petersburg: painters and musicians (Levitan, Tamagno), actresses (Yermolova), the imperial family (Nicholas II, 1900), the Yusupovs, the Morozovs and the Girshmans. A member of the World of Art, he also painted mythological scenes (The Rape of Europa, 1910), designed a curtain for the Ballets Russes and portrayed the dancer Ida Rubinstein (1910). Only works that the museums attribute to him without reservation, and of which a freely reusable photograph exists, are included: public-domain files from Wikimedia Commons (faithful reproductions of flat works); the origin of each image is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, with their translation.
