Works by William Hogarth (1697-1764), in the public domain: his paintings (portraits, conversation pieces, pictures from the moral series) and a selection of his most famous engravings, each linked to its record in the museum that holds it. Hogarth told a story in several pictures, like the acts of a play, then engraved it to sell it to everyone: for each series, the site shows the paintings when a free photograph exists, and the engravings otherwise, in a single impression per plate, the sharpest among those the museums publish. Some plates, too crude for a site used by schools, are not shown. The photographs are those of the museums when they place them in the public domain; otherwise another free photograph has been chosen, and its origin is given on the page of the work. The titles are those of the museums, in English, with their translation.
